Solid Waste Reduction

Reduce the solid waste stream prior to disposal by 70% through source reduction, recycling, bioconversion, and landfill diversion methods

The Aloha+ Challenge solid waste reduction goal builds on a State of Hawai‘i law mandating solid waste stream reduction by 50% by January 1, 2000. This target was not reached in Hawai‘i, nor any state in the U.S. Informed by technical experts, the State of Hawai‘i, four Counties, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs agreed to recommit to the target and increase ambition to 70% waste reduction by 2030. The Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard measures state and county progress towards waste stream reduction, including on source reduction, reuse, and recycling.
