Clean Energy Transformation

70% clean energy – 40% from renewable sources and 30% from efficiency, with a view towards 100% renewable energy by 2045

Clean energy paved the way for Hawai‘i’s Aloha+ Challenge sustainability goals, building on the 70% renewable energy target by 2030 set by the Hawai‘i Clean Energy Initiative in 2008. The State of Hawai‘i increased the ambition in 2015 by adopting the commitment to 100% renewable electricity by 2045 into state law, with the four Counties committing in 2017 to achieve 100% renewable energy in the transportation sector by 2045. The Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard measures Hawai‘i’s progress towards high-level clean energy goals.

Targets

By 2030, increase renewable energy in the electricity sector to 40% of total annual output.

By 2030, reduce total annual fossil fuel use to below the 2008 level.

By January 2020, reduce annual statewide greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels.

By 2030, decrease the annual quantity of fossil fuels used in Hawai’i.

By 2030, significantly decrease annual petroleum use in ground transportation.
